His Beatitude Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and Major Archbishop of Trivandrum, was born on 15 June 1959 to Mathew and Annamma Thottunkal at Mukkoor, Mallappally, in the civil district of Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India. At baptism, he was given the name Isaac, and he hails from the traditional Pakalomattom–Powathikunnel family.
He began his early education at St. Mary’s Government UP School, Kunnanthanam, and completed his secondary education at St. Mary’s High School, Annikad. Responding to God’s call to dedicate his life in service to the Church and to humanity, he joined the Infant Jesus Minor Seminary of the Eparchy of Tiruvalla in June 1976.
Bro. Isaac completed his Pre-Degree studies at St. Berchman’s College, Changanacherry, after which he pursued philosophical studies at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Aluva.
In 1978, with the bifurcation of the Eparchy of Tiruvalla, the new Eparchy of Bathery was established.
